On Maternity Clothing and Cold Weather Blues

Welcome to our hallway, folks. Since my last foray into outdoor picture-taking left me awkwardly scrambling in front of a neighbor I decided to try my luck inside, propping my phone inside a large door handle for stability. Perhaps not a work of photographic genius but it will have to do.

Many style bloggers attempt to make standard sizes work for them throughout their pregnancies. Personally, I find this notion rather odd: why would I want to stretch the clothing I hope to fit into again some day, or purchase larger sizes made for larger shoulders, chests, etc. when the majority of my body changes are localized in one spot? Stretchy skirts, like the one pictured above, have been a saving grace, but I have no interest in squeezing into tops simply not meant for my current body. Since I do plan on having more than one child, I've been viewing maternity shopping as somewhat of an investment for the future. So when I woke up this past week and realized that only one sweater could still comfortably fit over my bump [see above], I took a quick online visit to Target and Old Navy. Now just waiting for my cold weather duds to arrive! Until then, I will continue to layer in hopes of keeping warm. Wish me luck.

I definitely believe in investing in the classic pieces especially if you're planning on more kids. My investment purchases have lasted through two of my pregnancies and some friends at this point. The trendier stuff you can always get from places like H&M. And those stretchy skirts are the best because they're under your belly and re-shrink every wash!

You look great Nina and so beautiful too! I also don't understand why some women want to wear larger clothes that are not meant for pregnancy, pregnancy clothes have come a long way and there are some pretty cute and classic pieces that fit better than larger garments.

I'm 32 weeks now and I've not bought that much maternity stuff, but then I also haven't bought any bigger sized news stuff - I agree that's silly. A lot of tops from before still fit me. I do plan on having another child after this one, so I get what you're saying about investments, but it's still going to be only for a period of about 4 months that you really need it (or that has been the case for me anyway) and for that amount of time I can tolerate having a very limited wardrobe. For me it's a matter of keeping my already overflowing wardrobe in check.

Dude I am 100% with you. As a shorter person when I go up a size everything fits terrible in the shoulder and arms and length. Why would I do that to myself and there is NO WAY I am going to destroy and stretch out all those beautiful knits I have collected over the years.

The one "regular" size things I do buy are blazers and sweaters with no closures I find they are much cheaper than the maternity and I have more options. Target and Kohls are awesome for that stuff.

I haven't "invested" in anything. I have tried to keep it cheapish but I don't buy crap I buy it thinking oh I can get another baby out of this. I have tried to only buy a few things and only in super versatile colors or ways to wear. Nothing dated at all.

I was not lucky and only needed new stuff for "four months" I needed new stuff about 2 months into it because I already had a large rack and accommodating the ever expanding one was necessary pretty quickly. Also my wardrobe prior consisted mostly of fitted waist items and that expanded immediately. I can't wear much of my old stuff at all. only a couple things and haven't for almost 3 months.
