I've really been enjoying the tied button down shirt over maxi dress look these past few weeks as the temperature hovers around 100 degrees. As Covergirl (and Tyra) have hammered into my head: easy, breezy, hopefully less sweaty than other options. I wore a similar look a few weeks ago, and have been returning time and again for the ease of wearing what essentially amounts to outdoor pajamas.

Unexpected consequences of unemployment: how to stay cool while not working in an air conditioned office? We generally keep the air off in our apartment to save trees and money, but I have really been struggling over the past few weeks. Mayor Bloomberg has been suggesting that New Yorkers visit local cooling stations to keep out of the heat; I've interpreted that variously as the local mall, my mother's house, the library and Target.
How are you keeping cool?

Love the shirt.
outdoor pjs, I like that! it looks lovely!
On our hottest day, we wanted to keep our usual plan of going to the playground/wading pool. So I read up on how to not get heat-sick (which happens to me very easily) and I learned some new things. I dressed us all in light colored, loose, clothing of cotton or linen. And I soaked our hair in water and tied it up in buns. Then I tied a wet scarf over my hair, and my daughter just wore her sunhat. When we were at the pool, I stood with my feet in it. I drank lots of water, electrolyte drinks too, and kept rewetting my scarf. I tied it around my head, neck, draped it over my shoulders, dabbed my face. Whatever. Anything to help me feel cooler. Basically, heat sickness is caused by the body's temperature rising to 40celcius, a fever. So, drinking a lot doesn't help me, its not caused by dehydration. These extra measure helped me feel much cooler, and I preferred staying cool that way to staying in air-conditioning all day. Air conditioning makes me feel worse, going from heat to AC to heat to AC several times a day just doesn't work. So anyways. My biggest tip - soak your head!
I have that dress in a flowery pattern as well as one with is similar but with buttoms in a striped fabric. They are really great on a hot day but I can't wear them today, both are in the wash I am afraid. I am on vacation now and I can add my question How do you stay cool when you work in an office without airconditioning? Answer: You can't, you just try to at least do something and long for your vacation while getting a worse and worse headache for each hour. At home I am OK with a fan, we do not have aircondition there either but I don't have to work there either.
I love that shirt it is so cute, and as an answer to my blog post: I didn't know what sea glass was either till my husband explained it to me while we were dating. His parents make jewelry out of it.
