Yesterday morning I attended the funeral of my friend's grandfather, so my brights and patterns took a backseat for the day. I did try to have a bit of fun with the fishnet patterned tights, turned up cuffs and my chunky watch. Here is what I would look like if my style was slightly more (O)orthodox.
The list:
-white button down, Ralph Lauren
-blue cardigan, H&M
-grey skirt, Target
-nude patterned fishnets, Jessica Simpson
-navy pointy flats, Steve Madden
-cameo necklace, gift from Mom
-flower earrings, F21
-navy beret, Parkhurst
This outfit, though plain, has me thinking: how do you express your individual style when your options are restricted? Usually, I frame this question in terms of modesty, but sometimes-- a funeral, job interview, big meeting- being too out-there in terms of dress is inappropriate. Balancing personal style with appropriate dress can be tricky, but here is one attempt using small details.
What are your tricks for making an outfit uniquely yours even when dressing for a conservative occasion?

Having tights that are not solid color is something I would use too. At a funeral it is hard to be inventive though, but for a job interview I would have one of my many pairs of colorful tights and perhaps a cool necklace or hand bag. The last funeral I went to I wore a simple black dress and a black shawl and only a small brouche made out of "gold" and with a purple stone which belonged to my mum. It has no value when it comes to money but it cute and not too over the top at a funeral but still a break from the black.
Well I use lots of colors when I dress, I also look at magazines and of course everything is so bare flesh these days that I just use it as an inspiration of the colors or the way I see something but always make it my own, especially when they have pants on since I don't wear pants I always change it to a skirt. For other places such as funerals, interviews I don't try to be all that fashionable, just keep it simple and elegant but those days are really not to show off my outfits. Brighter parties are another thing, I always rely on pins and belts, and head accessories since all other jewelry is not seen as very modest.
I have always wanted to try the nude fishnets, love the way they look. I must try them now. =)
I think you definitely made this look your own---love it! I usually attempt to keep a look "mine" with the accessories and color. Even on rather professional days, a statement necklace or a brightly colored top are rarely a problem in my book!
This is a great outfit for a serious event. I have trouble making conservative (as not just modest, but formal looking outfit) look "me", probably because I have a casual approach to just about everything. I love the tights and accessories!
This outfit is perfect for the occasion: modest and somber. I usually turn to accessories for occasions when I have to play by more restricted sartorial rules. I'll carry my bright green briefcase or wear an interesting necklace or funky shoes.
Very classic and cute look!! I love how the cuff of your shirt peeks out the cardi and I also love the necklace!!

My tricks include conventional items worn unconventionally : floral brooches pinned to the side, bowties encircled around my neck, patterned tights, and shoe clips on patent leather shoes.
i spy an awesome watch .... details please!!! ;-)

I love this outfit because it is very classic and this colour scheme is one of my favourites for an outfit. I adore your shoes and your tights are pretty too.
I love adding unique accessories to any outfit. A hat with a vintage brooch, A long necklace with multiple charms or a cute scarf adds uniqueness and personal flair.
I think you have the right idea with the small details. You look completely lovely while still respectful. Wonderfully done!
